Siamese Cats? Faux Siamese Cats?

Our family has always owned Siamese cats that look like this:

Brutus, our much loved Siamese senior citizen

After our beloved T-Rex

T-Rex passed away in April 2012, leaving our family bereft.

passed away, we pined for another Siamese cat to keep our old buddy Brutus (and us) company. That’s when I got the brilliant idea to rescue a Siamese. I scoured a Siamese rescue website looking for a fur buddy for Brutus.

When I saw a fluffy flame-point Siamese kitten on line I arranged to adopt him and have him shipped to us on what I dubbed the Animal Express–a van outfitted with cages that takes animals rescued in Georgia to points north, like New Jersey, where we live.

Apollo, kinda cranky looking, right?

“Pesto” arrived in the wee morning hours in December 2012, and we loved him immediately, even though he has a tendency to sulk. Two weeks later the rescue group contacted me to find out how our kitten was adjusting. And to let me know his litter-mate brother was pining for him. After a weekend of back-and-forth conversations our family decided to adopt Pesto’s (now named Apollo) lonely brother. So the Animal Express arrived in the wee morning hours once again at our home with another flame-point Siamese cat. This was the first time our family ever owned three cats at one time.

Odie, a little skittish, but never grouchy.

Time passed. The kittens grew. And grew. AND GREW. They look like no Siamese we have ever owned. They have long sturdy legs. Big round feet. They each weigh 14 pounds (okay, they may weigh even more, but have you ever tried to weigh a cat?). And fur? They have lots and lots of fur.  And they shed.

Did I mention that our two young cats shed like crazy (which our other Siamese never did). They shed like Akitas, Border Collies and Dalmatians. And it drives me crazy. We pet the Great Whites (you know, like those huge sharks), as we now call them, and fur flies: Guard hairs. Undercoat. The more we pet them, the more they shed. The happier they are, the more they shed. Twice a year (spring and fall) I can get a blizzard going with a few well-placed ear rubs!

Tell me the truth…do the two thugs under the rocker look like Siamese to you?

You be the judge...

Come on, I can take it. They are embedded in our hearts (kinda like their fur is embedded in my black jeans) so it’s not like we’d get rid of them or anything, but…really…Siamese?
